Course Description This course covers practical methods for performing process hazard analyses (PHAs) of systems, procedures, and computer software using the hazard and operability (HAZOP) and what-if/checklist techniques that will address federal regulatory requirements. Qualify as a "knowledgeable" PHA leader, as required by OSHA and EPA, and be eligible for certification as a PHA leader. Learn how to perform a PHA, including these critical elements:
- Scoping the PHA
- Collecting information
- Selecting the team
- Leading a meeting
- Documenting results
Application to Your Industry You will learn how to apply HAZOP and/or what-if/checklist analyses to any process system in industries as diverse as chemical, petroleum, pulp and paper, explosives, mining, iron and steel, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products. HAZOP and What-if/Checklist Techniques HAZOP analysis and what-if/checklist analyses are the most popular techniques for initial PHAs, ongoing management of change reviews, and revalidation because they both facilitate systematic, imaginative searches for process hazards and potential operational difficulties. Each technique has unique strengths in analyzing certain types of systems. You will lead and participate in several analyses to become familiar with the techniques before completing the course. Human Factors Because human factors analysis is such an important part of a PHA, one full day of instruction will focus on human factors issues. You will learn how to apply the HAZOP and what-if/checklist techniques to analyzing procedures (such as system startup, shutdown, batch operation, and maintenance) for the hazards of not performing a step as specified. You will also learn how to investigate the work situation for root causes of human error. Software Computerized methods for performing and documenting a HAZOP analysis will be demonstrated. And if you register for the 5-day option, you will also receive the state-of-the-art, Windows®-based HazardReview LEADER software (and a detailed user's guide) for documenting a PHA (using HAZOP, what-if, failure modes and effects analysis [FMEA], and other techniques). For the 5-day option, bring your laptop to participate in workshops and gain an in-depth understanding of your new software.
Low Student-to-Teacher Ratio A low ratio of students to instructors (no more than 7:1) ensures plenty of one-on-one coaching by our expert instructors during realistic workshop exercises. How You Will Benefit Come away from the course with these valuable materials:
- A copy of the HazardReview LEADER software and manual (5-day attendees only)
- A dvd on the HAZOP technique
- A copy of the course notes and problem solutions
- A Manager's Guide to Reducing Human Errors
- A certificate of completion
