Course Description
Learn Process Safety Essentials to Help You Do Your Job Better
If you design, operate, or maintain hazardous systems, a working knowledge of process safety concepts, principles, and tools is essential. This course teaches you process safety essentials that will help you design better systems; identify hazards in your workplace; and effectively participate in hazard analyses, management of change reviews, and incident investigations.
In this course, you will learn:
- Basic process safety terminology (flammability limit, risk, design basis relief scenario, etc.)
- How to identify hazards
- Frequently encountered oversights (common traps) in process designs
- Basic risk assessment methodologies
- How to select appropriate levels of protection against a hazard (e.g., interlock levels)
Identify, Evaluate, and Control Risks
The course begins with a brief introduction to process safety management as described in various industry initiatives and government regulations (e.g., OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.119, EPA's 40 CFR 68). Within this context, the course teaches basic skills that will enhance your ability to:
- Identify hazards
- Evaluate (understand) the risk associated with a hazard
- Minimize and/or control the risk
Be Able to Answer These Key Questions
At the completion of the course you will be able to address the following questions:
- How can I spot a hazard? The course includes workshops during which you apply the techniques discussed.
- Is the hazard adequately controlled? Risk concepts will be used to help you assist in evaluating hazards.
- What if we have an accident? You’ll receive an overview of mitigation/containment features that might be used to minimize the impact/effects of an accident and review typical emergency planning and response measures. You’ll also be introduced to techniques used to conduct incident investigations and discover the root causes of the incident.
How You Will Benefit
- You will become familiar with fundamental hazard terminology and the potential consequences that are associated with hazards
- You will be more effective at identifying process hazards
- You will become familiar with techniques for evaluating risk
- You will learn steps your organization can take to minimize the risk of an accident scenario, including how to plan for emergencies and how to learn from accidents
