Course Description
This course is designed for persons who will manage or conduct internal audits of an organization's health, safety and environmental (HSE) management system. The course prepares organizations to meet the internal audit requirements of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Delegates will learn how auditors interpret the requirements of the standards and how to plan, conduct and report on the results of an internal HSE management system audit. Auditing methodologies are based on ISO 19011:2002 “Guidelines for quality and environmental management systems auditing,” an international standard. Delegates will practice what they learn in simulated audits and receive sets of forms that can be immediately adapted for use in their own internal audit programs.
Training Objectives
To provide delegates with the knowledge to:
- Establish a program of internal HSE management systems audits
- Plan, conduct and report on the results of internal audits
- Develop and implement the necessary documents and forms to manage an internal audit program
- Train and evaluate the performance of internal auditors
- Review and improve the HSE management system audit program
Training Methodology
The course includes presentation of information through lectures, practical exercises and "workshops," where delegates practice planning for and conducting an internal management systems audit. Delegates will work in groups to identify how requirements of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 may be satisfied, to plan the opening meeting of an audit, and to perform the tasks of an auditor during an audit. Delegates will then plan a closing meeting, prepare a report of audit results, and learn how to conduct audit follow-up activities. The training emphasizes the analysis of audit evidence which leads to audit findings and conclusions. Audit forms are provided that can be customized for use by the delegates' organizations.
Organizational Impact
Implementing and maintaining an HSE management system in accordance with internationally recognized standards helps organizations achieve desired results in health, safety and environmental performance. An important element of formal management systems—and the key to their effectiveness—is a program of internal audits that detects problems and leads to preventive action and corrective action. This “self-correcting mechanism” is a major driver for achieving stated objectives and targets and for the continual improvement of the management system itself.
Personal Impact
Delegates attending this course will develop the knowledge and skills needed to perform as an effective management systems lead auditor, team auditor, or audit program manager. The course is also beneficial for members of higher levels of management who will review internal management system audit reports.
Competencies Emphasized
The course emphasizes the practical knowledge needed to interpret the requirements of internationally recognized health, safety and environmental management systems standards. Delegates will use analytical abilities and draw upon their personal attributes and interpersonal skills to assess audit information, to plan and conduct audits, to reach conclusions, and to report on results.
